two strands of d.m.c. start using two of one colour, then one of (a) and one of (b), then two of (b) etc... it's effective and lovely to do. in my classes, girls have done it in shades of pink, or introduced a gold colour at the tips etc. purples...
the spine is ceylon stitch (like vandyke) but roumanian couching works well too. the 'leaves' are satin stitch but buttonhole works very well.
